(NEW LONDON, CT) Eastern Connecticut’s premiere showplace for the performing arts, the Garde Arts Center, announced subscriptions are now on sale for the 2007/08 Citizens Bank Broadway Series. The five-show series opens on October 17, 2007 with GYPSY, and includes EVITA, CHICAGO, HAIRSPRAY and MOVIN’ OUT.

May 02, 2007 10:35 AM - GYPSY
Wednesday, October 17, 2007 | 7:30 pm & Thursday, October 18, 2007 | 7:30 pm

Theatre giants Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Robbins combine forces to trace the glitzy showbiz rise of two daughters, fueled by an overbearing, ambitious stage mother, Rose, as her larger-than-life dreams turns them into stars. Big, brassy, energetic, touching, funny and memorable, Gypsy reaffirms America’s love of good old-fashioned entertainment with songs like “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People,” “You Gotta Have A Gimmick,” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”

EVITA
Friday, January 11, 2008 | 8:00 pm & Saturday, January 12, 2008 | 3:00 and 8:00 pm

Winner of seven Tony Awards, Evita brings to life the dynamic, larger-than-life persona of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator, Juan Peron, who captivated a nation by championing the working class. One of the most popular collaborations between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, this legendary musical features the memorable song “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” in Webber's compelling Latin, pop and jazz influenced score.

CHICAGO
Friday, February 9, 2008 | 8:00 pm & Saturday, February 9 | 3:00 and 8:00 pm

Still running on Broadway, Chicago’s story follows two real life murderesses and a lawyer who turns them into media celebrities. Winner of 6 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, and the basis for an Oscar-winning film, Chicago features the “razzle-dazzle” music and lyrics of master Broadway composers Kander and Ebb (Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman).

HAIRSPRAY
Saturday, March 15, 2008 | 8:00 pm & Sunday, March 16 | 2:00 and 7:00 pm

Travel back to 1962 Baltimore as 16-year old Tracy Turnblad sets out to dance her way onto TV's most popular show. Can a big girl with big dreams--and even bigger hair!--change the world...and still have time to win the boy she loves? A musical-comedy phenomenon still on Broadway, Hairspray is the winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

MOVIN’ OUT
Saturday, March 29, 2008 | 8:00 pm & Sunday, March 30 | 2:00 and 7:00 pm

5-time Grammy winner Billy Joel and legendary director/choreographer Twyla Tharp have joined forces to create the spectacular new musical bringing 24 Billy Joel classics to electrifying new life as it tells the story of five life-long friends over two turbulent decades. Time magazine declared Movin' Out, “The #1 show of the year.”

A special optional event added to the Broadway Series, Say Goodnight, Gracie: The Life, Love, and Laughter of George Burns and Gracie Allen will officially open the Garde Arts Center season on Friday, September 28, 2007 at 8:00 pm. Tony and Emmy Award-winning writer Rupert Holmes and veteran director John Tillinger present a guided tour through an American century told through the eyes of George Burns from his impoverished youth on the lower East side, to his career in Vaudeville, his marriage to Gracie Allen, their rise to success on stage, screen, radio and TV, and finally George’s “second time around”.
