Fiber at the Garde ’07 will feature fiber artists living in Connecticut and will showcase a variety of pieces exemplifying art quilting, or “non-traditional” quilting. In seeking out the Garde Arts Center, exhibition coordinator Linda Sexton-Patrick saw a chance to “give Connecticut artists an opportunity to show their work,” while also exposing the Garde’s 2007-08 season audiences to a new and exciting variation on studio art with contemporary art quilting. “Rather than concentrating on traditional quilt making, an art quilt is a contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns common to the whole range of visual arts which retains, through materials or technique, a clear relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends.” (Studio Art Quilt Associates, www.saqa.com) Contributing artists are members of Studio Art Quilt Associates (Storrs, CT), Sisters in Cloth (Guilford, CT), and local independent artists. Sale proceeds will benefit the Garde Children’s Guild, a fund created to provide young people and their families with affordable access to the Garde’s performances and programs. Fiber at the Garde ’07 can be viewed in the Garde Arts Center during Box Office hours (9am-4pm Monday-Friday and two hours before performances). An opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 22 from 5:30-7:30 pm.
